Yungchen Lhamo

A holy man bestowed Yungchen Lhamo her name when she was a child. Translated, it means "Goddess of Melody and Song". Yungchen Lhamo never dreamed she would have a career as a singer. Even though her grandmother knew that it would be her destiny, Yungchen was more preoccupied with work in order to provide for her family in impoverished Tibet. Later she would trek 1,000 miles across the Himalayas, barefoot and alone, to reach freedom. Discovered by Peter Gabriel’s label Real World when working in Australia, her sublime voice carries her native traditional chants across the globe, inciting all who hear her to pray for a brighter future for Tibet. "There are many countries around the world where people are experiencing incredible suffering. Each one has their way of bringing their plight to the attention of the world. Through singing as I do, I hope to fulfill that role."
In 1995, Tibetan Prayer won the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Award) for best world music album of the year. She has since released Tibet, Tibet followed by Coming Home on the Real World label, and has made appearances at WOMADelaide, the Knitting Factory, and the Lillith Fair.
